Freemasonry is governed by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) and is considered to be one of the earliest organisations ever to be created, showcasing the formation and progress of Freemasonry. The modern notion of Freemasonry began in the Medieval period aiding the creation of grand cathedrals and titanic castles, each with the nuances of our practices crafted deeply within them.
Freemasonry focuses of four grand principles: Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity. These characteristics have been shown by many brethren across multiple generations and have become integral assets to the everlasting bond we share between us. Adding on to this, Freemasonry also focuses highly on three respecting concepts. These are: Neighbourly Concern, Charity and Moral Standards. As Freemasons we refer to these principles as Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.
With over 200,000 members in various districts in England, Wales and overseas, UGLE prides itself on its inclusivity, meaning that men of any background or social orientation can join our brotherhood. As a collective, we aim to bring people together, form lasting friendships and teach the valuable principles of Freemasonry. UGLE gains an immeasurable sense of honour from being a male only organisation, allowing a fraternal bond to be assembled over the shared passion of caring for our community. Despite being a single gendered organisation, a counterpart known as Orders of Women’s Freemasons has been formed around the world.
As an institution that focuses on philanthropy, we donate our time and money to a variety of treasured charities. In 2019 alone, Freemasons managed to donated around £42 million to a collection of worthy causes, making UGLE one of the largest charitable donors in the country.
